Syed Mohammed: Backed our batsmen to chase down the total

LYCA Kovai Kings captain Syed Mohammed addressed the media after his team beat the KaraikudiKaalai team by six wickets in the India Cements Ltd TNPL match at India Cements Ltd Ground, Sankarnagar on Sunday. Here are the excerpts from the media interaction:

At one point of time, you lost two quick wickets. What was running in your mind at that point of time?

Ans: We wanted to consolidate for some time and then backed our batsmen to get even 20 runs from last two overs. There was Rohith and Mohammad as well. We decided to not give the opponents the momentum to take away the game from us. We wanted to take ones and twos and hit the loose balls for boundaries. Rohith hit couple of vital sixes which changed the course of the match.

Run rate slowed down in the middle overs. What were your thoughts when you were batting?

Ans: We always back the batting team when they require 20 runs to win in two overs with five-six wickets in hand. The wicket also looked good and we backed our players to chase down the total.

Kovai Kings’ fielding wasn’t that great. What do you have to say about that?

Ans: We dropped two important catches. It can’t be said as a reason, but as a challenge because the wind was heavy in one side and sometimes the ball travelled and sometimes it stopped. Last year we had the same trouble and hence why we practised two days prior to the start of the game. We couldn’t adapt, but we will definitely improve in our upcoming games.

What was the pitch like?

Ans: We started with spin because it was a strategy to counter their batsmen. We know their strengths and weakness because we have all been playing together for a long time now. We thought bowling spin to their opening batsmen will be better and we executed it.
