John Wick: Chapter 4 is an American neo-noir action thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch. The sequel to John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and the fourth installment in the John Wick franchise. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski.
JW 4 stays faithful to it’s now well popular scheme. Beginning from a wasted chase in some middle East desert to culminating on a high rise building in Paris, the set pieces that follow one after another is bloated, overlong and cretinous at times. The lean and mean action scenes of the past give way to ostentatious long drawn out action sequences that are high on debauchery and at some places smart in it’s details but in most scores low on ingenuity. Wit is sparse and short. JW4 is audacious, loud and noisy. Dialogues are far and few while the guns do most of the talking or should we say a monologue. While the first half is lethargic and the second half just about manages to evince some interest, it is the last half an hour that is redemption time and salvages this otherwise bullet ridden script with lots of illogical bulletholes.
JW 4’s casting scores. Keanu Reeves looks fatigued. Donnie Yen is fun and alongwith Bill Skasgard impress the most.
Shamiers Anderson is good as is Ian McShane.
Dan Laustsen’s cinematography is brilliant across different locations capturing the fantastic skylines and architecture. Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard deliver the background score that is required. Dialogues are few and editing generous. Direction by Chad Stahelski is on an adrenaline rush.
JOHN WICK is a trick with hundreds of fallen men and countless bullets fired as it trips over a thousand stairs and still manages to stay up, though beaten..
