Akira Movie Review

AkiraIt is well known that this ARM movie is the remake of the hit as well as well acclaimed Tamil film Mouna guru. Wonder why ARM chose this particular script after the hugely successful remakes of his own movies.

The script sticks faithfully to the original but ARM adds a little of his “routine” to try and stamp his signature. While the original had the lead played by a male and was projected to be an introvert, ARM chooses this script to show “Woman power” and casts a female as the protagonist. This is perhaps where he erred. The script barely suits a female character for the lead role and falls flat on its face. The melodrama and the formulaic scenes just don’t click. The story was not a novel one even in the original but was made up with some subtle performances and restrained presentation, but in Akira the flaws look magnified.

Sonakshi Sinha does her best but still comes out unconvincing in a weak script. In a movie hyped as a show of woman power it is the male Anurag Kashyap who steals a march over everyone with his measured wickedness. The others are very average in their weak roles.

The cinematography is good and so is the background score with just one song. Better editing could have helped the movie a lot. ARM as the director flounders here in Akira, he works along the lines of a woman action hero and ironically ends AKIRA in a whimper.
