Kavin’s choice of films have always been intriguing. STAR is no different. The film eases into comfort zone immediately with the movie making the right retro noises. The plot is a mismash of a few films before but Elan deftly presents the story through an engaging screenplay that never shies away from being honest to the story. The first half is a breeze while the real drama begins in the second. What works for the film are the emotions that are pragmatic and ambitions that are not superfluous. The messaging is not preachy and yet make a statement as the film glides through with minor hitches that can be ignored. It has been a long time since Tamil cinema has shown a journey of a regular middle class family and STAR is all about dreams, ambitions, fortunes and misfortunes narrated in a sensible way. The climax could definitely have been thought out better.
Kavin steals the show with a terrific performance. Just a couple films old and he seems to grow from strength to strength. Preity Mukundan is super cool and impresses with her act. Aaditi Pohankar is fine. Lal is decent while Geetha Kailasam is good.
Cinematography by Ezhil Arasu is neat. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is effective while his fans will lap up his template songs. Pradeep Ragav’s editing is OK. Dialogues are good and direction is admirable..
STAR shines bright among the mediocre films of late !!
