NANBAN ORUVAN VANTHA PIRAGU is a youth friendship drama that is written and directed by debutant Ananth of “Meesaya Murkukku”. The film is produced by Venkat Prabhu.
NOVP makes a fresh start and things move smoothly until it falls back on the usual template of a screenplay that most Tamil films use when it comes to youth dramas. Yet, there are some cool moments and a piece of the script that might appeal to most of the kids during the late 90s and early 2000’s. That works for the film. Another highlight is the lack of commercial ingredients like songs, dance and action that we are usually accustomed to. The film sticks to its plot though the hero’s self-pity feels unpersuasive, but then most of the youth of today feel the same victimhood. The first half feels decent while in the second half the film lags a bit and with no surprises or twists the second half of the film manages to sail through.
Ananth in an unassuming role has played his part and has received good support from his bunch of friends. Bhavani Sre is OK. Madan Gowri is average in a small part. The one who manages to impress is the HOD of the college.
Tamil Selvan’s cinematography is good. Kaashif’s musical score is a huge asset. Fenny Oliver’s editing is decent. Dialogues are good and direction is fine for a debutant.
NANBAN ORUVAN VANTHA PIRAGU offers nothing new, but would interest the young ones !!
