MEIYAZHAGAN is not the typical film one expects to watch. It is not even in the mould of PK’s previous film 96, in this film he embarks on a totally different journey of story telling that would not be everyone’s cup of tea. But then the film maker who believes in his script sticks to the narrative that he conceptualises and rarely goes away from it. So what you end up having is some indulgence, some forced representations, some personal convictions that end up being woven into a script that could have been otherwise much more endearing and entertaining that it turns out to be. The monologues and the dialogues can get a bit heavy at times because the first thing that becomes the casualty is the story. Then there is the romanticism of the lead character that is loaded with attributes that pleases everyone, seriously!!? But the film has moments that are emotional and connects powerfully.
What helps the film is it’s casting. Karthi is as comfortable as he can get in this rural setting and delivers. Arvind Swamy is the surprise in such a setting and he does perform much more than expected. Raj Kiran and Ilavarasu are good in their short cameos. The rest of the star cast too perform admirably.
Mahendra Jayaraju’s earthy cinematography is a huge plus. Govind Vasantha’s musical score compliments the narrative wonderfully well. Dialogues are good. Editing could have been a little tight. Direction by Prem Kumar is neat.
MEIYAZHAGAN is a complex brew !!
