“Kudumbasthan” is a Tamil family drama that is well-intentioned, but ultimately fails to convince. The film’s story is predictable and the screenplay is often contrived. The performances are also inconsistent, with some actors delivering convincing performances while others seem to be phoning it in. The first half is real good and it is in the second half that the film takes a lot of melodrama and suffers here and there. The film’s technical aspects are also not up to par, with the sets and cinematography looking cheap and uninspired. However, the film is not without its merits. The background score is quite good and there are some moments of genuine humour. The film also has a good heart and it is clear that the filmmakers were trying to make a sincere film about family.
Manikandan puts out his best efforts and comes out good. Guru Somasundram is impressive. Saanve Meghana is good too.
Cinematography by Sujith is decent. Vaisagh’s background score works. Dialogues are good and editing by Kannan Balu could have been crisper. Direction for a first timer is effective.
KUDUMBASTHAN is good, but feels lengthy
