KOTTUKKAALI MOVIE REVIEW

KOTTUKKAALI is a rural drama that is written and directed by P. S. Vinothraj and produced by SK Productions.

The film surprises you immediately as it unveils the production company name without any background score. It is clear that the intention of the film is to clearly nominate itself to all the possible awards that keep going around and hence the staging and the slowness of the drama that unfolds is very obvious. The film takes us back to the Doordarshan era of award films. In the name of reality, you do have lengthy scenes that don’t necessarily create any impact or move the story ahead, those are just to create the award effect, some as silly as urinating. But then not everything is slow in the writing, there are moments where the film does strike a chord, moments the lazy comedy works and places where the actors elevate the scene with just intense expressions. The abrupt end was the clincher and it did create the effect.

Soori is slowly but surely becoming a better actor by the day. Anna Ben with tight shots on her delivers when it matters. The rest are their usual natural self.

Cinematography by Sakthivel is energetic. Without a background score, the film still manages to communicate its intensity through delivery. Dialogues are good and direction is neat.

KOTTUKKAALI is strictly for art film fans who do would not mind its snail pace for Rs.160/- !!

KOTTUKAALI – KOTTU !!
