Sethu Football Club (Madurai) held Rising Student Club (Odisha) to a 1-1 draw in their final qualifying Group A match in Kolhapur (Maharashtra) on Sunday in the AIFF-Indian Women’s League.
With seven points from two wins, a draw and a loss in the all-play-all five-team group, Sethu FC, the only team from Tamil Nadu in the premier women’s competition organised by the All India Football Federation, finished third in the group behind toppers Rising Student Club and Indira Gandhi AS&E (Pondicherry)
As group toppers Rising Student Club qualified for the main draw to be played early next year.
Sethu played impressively against the Odisha side. The Madurai side’s defense was solid and they didn’t give an inch to the opposition. Goalkeeper Soumiya especially turned in a solid performance.
R Sumithra took a good shot early but missed the mark by inches. Manisha and Puja Karmakar also made inroads but were unable to convert as the first half ended goalless.
Pyari Xaxa put Rising Student Club ahead in the 47th minute. Sumithra equalised for the Tamil Nadu outfit two minutes later, the pass coming from Karthika.
“Given that this is our first national tournament, I’m happy with the overall performance by our girls,” said coach Kalpana Dass.
“Like I said before the tournament, this is a huge learning curve for our side. There were some highpoints and there are also areas that we will have to improve. One defeat in four games but that made the difference,” the coach added.
