YAAKAI MOVIE REVIEW

Kuzhandai Velappan returns with Yaakai after a long break. His writing in Aanmai Thavaral was widely appreciated and with Yaakai he takes up the mantle of direction as well.

Medical thrillers are not easy pickings and Velappan picks this genre with romance as its underbelly and presents it in an impressive way. The screenplay more or less stays faithful with some interesting moments and an unconventional staging of parallel stories converging. Though the suspense is revealed at the beginning the movie unfolds with some curious twists as the investigation unfolds.

Kreshna does his act well, as a college student he pulls it off with his energy, while Swathi has a decent role in the movie. Prakash Raj as the investigation officer comes out good while the much fancied Giri Somasundram of “Joker” fame as the villain is convincing in his quite “unusual” style.

Cinematography by Sathya Ponnar is good while editing is neat. Yuvan Shankar disappoints with his songs while his BGM scores good. Dialogues work fine and Velappan in the direction department does a clean job.

YAAKAI is a decent offering from Velappan and his team and is worth a one-time watch
