Vetrivel Movie Review

Vetrivel“Vetrivel” written and directed by Vasanthamani is old wine in old bottle. The director seems very familiar with the rural milieu and tries to work it to his advantage. The story is as old as the hills with a topping of “Nadodigal”. The “Nadodigal” twist is appreciable but loses steam very soon. Surprisingly the director packages this story that lacks depth in an old wrapper and it becomes tiresome after a while. The screen play is very average and the 80’s inspired comedy track by Thambi Ramaiah just about manages a few guffaws. The screenplay is predictable and save for a very few scenes is almost a drag.

It is familiar territory for Sasi Kumar and he goes about his business with nonchalance. His introduction song shows his discomfort in dancing and his expressions lack confidence while mouthing punch lines. Mia George manages a decent show as well as the support cast. Prabhu as the village president has little to do and goes about his job professionally.

Cinematography is largely functional with little scope to perform. Iman with his background score goes overboard a few times. The songs are straight out of Iman’s juke box and make little impact. The action scenes are mediocre.

On the whole “Vetrivel” might faintly appeal to the rural audience. With a lot more effort it could have been a decent watch. For now it’s barely manageable.
