Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies produce this film that is written by Mani Ratnam and Dhana. Dhana is MR’s protege whose earlier film was “Padaiveeran”.
VK kicks off with a lot of intensity, yes just the first couple of scenes and then it squanders an interesting premise by being so “Mani”mastic in its execution and narrative. The loose ended dialogues and scenes, the freeze moments and nonchalant mention of sensitive issues offer nothing new for viewers who are so used to films from Madras Talkies. The film drags on with one open end being the only reason for the viewer to foresee it’s closure. VK lacks the vehemence as well as the depth in emotions that’s usually the hallmark of MR movies and ends up mostly flaky.
Vikram Prabhu is quite good in a role that suits him and his body language. Nanda has little to do despite two roles. Shantanu has a largely inconsequential role. Madonna is okay while Aishwarya Rajesh tries too much. Sarath Kumar and Radhika showcase their fine performance along with Balaji Sakthivel is impressive.
Preetha Jayaraman sticks to the famous MR frames and they work too. Sid and K ensure that you do not miss ARR much. The Coke studio styled songs are eminently forgotten despite the repeats in BG. Dialogues are standard. Direction very ordinary.
VAANAM KOTTATUM is a slight drizzle from Madras Talkies that largely looks like an output of a poor imitation of a Mani + ARR combo(ironically that’s outdated too)
