THE POPE’S EXORCIST MOVIE REVIEW

THE POPE’S EXORCIST is supernatural horror film written by Michael Petroni, Evan Spiliotopoulos, R. Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings and directed by Julius Avery. It is based on true events and Amorth’s memoirs An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.

The story is not a surprise as you would expect from the horror stable. Hence what one would expect is the thrill and the scare to make one jump out of the seat. On the contrary as the screenplay settles in, the viewer too gets cozy and comfortable thanks to a shoddy CGI and an amusing devil. The one liners and the premise does little to evince any curiosity in the film.

You got to give the film its due when it makes no bones in outlying issues that affect the highest echelons of the church, but that is barely enough. With a gripping outline and a narrative that touches upon important aspects that affect this “possession”, THE POPE’S EXORCIST muffles it by being soft on the very reason movie goers would want to watch the film, terror.

Russel Crowe carries the film well on his shoulders. Alex Essoe is decent. Peter DeSouza-Feighoney and Laurel Marsden are neat. Daniel Zavatto is OK.

Cinematography by Khalid Mohtaseb is average. Jed Jurzel’s background score is good. Dialogues are middling. Editing by Matt Evans is fine. Direction is standard.

THE POPE’S EXORCIST is more lazy and less scary !
