RICHIE is the remake of the famed neo noir movie “Ulidavru kandanthe” in Kannada that though well received critically did not fare well at the box office.
Richie is not the routine movie that you see in the movie halls, a story and screenplay that has heavy western influence is domesticated to suit the interests of people here. The movie begins from nowhere and it would take the viewer time to understand the happenings on screen and its relation to one another. The movie then slowly starts making sense and by then it culminates as expected. Richie is layered and non linear so there would be a lot of indulgence as well as intention that the viewer might miss to appreciate or the ones who understand might appreciate.
This well could be the issue too. But this Tamil remake that is shortened, still does not turn out to be gripping as the original. Could be the rushed depictions did not match the slow motion narration.
Nivy Paul needed no introduction despite being this movie being his launch vehicle. His swag and nonchalance does work majorly though his diction at places could have been better. Natty is good as he can get in his role and the others including Shradda do their job neatly.
Technically these kinds of movies exploit the potential of the technicians behind the film. Camera work is good though not outstanding by Pandi Kumar. Athul Vijay editing is average, while it is Ajaneesh Loknath the star among the technicians. His BG as well as the songs haunts well after the movie. Dialogues are decent and direction for a first timer and a remake could have been better.
RICHIE is not for the average movie goer, so might not go well with the regular audience but deserves encouragement.
