Merku Thodarchi Malai Movie Review

A movie that shows the sad state of farmers in India is what forms the crux of ‘Merku Thodarchi Malai’. The film has Antony (Rangasamy) and Gayathri Krishna (Eshwari) in the lead roles.

The movie is based out of Idukki (in Kerala) and talks about the plight of farmers who are working in the spice plantations there. Rangasamy is a plantation worker and helps carry loads across places. He eventually ends up saving a little money with which he plans to start something of his own.

He eventually meets Eshwari and is married off to her and they start a family together. Things start going bad for Rangasamy when he buys a piece of land and starts farming on it, but due to the rains the crop gets damaged. He eventually goes into heavy debt and his life is in a big mess.

There is a political party worker, Saako (Abu Valayangulam) who supports the workers and fights for their rights. Saako gets cheated by his own men for money and he and the other workers along with Rangasamy in a fit of rage end up kiling those corrupt people and going to jail.

Does life become normal for Rangasamy after he returns from jail? Is he able to get back to farming or does life have other plans for him? Watch the movie and find out for yourself.

The film is produced by Vijay Sethupathi under the Dream Tree Productions and VT Cinemas banner. Music is by Isaignani Ilayaraja who has done the lyrics and singing too and is the Directorial debut of Lenin Bharathi, who has worked on the story and screenplay as well.

One of the best things about the movie is its cinematography which is by Theni Eshwar. The amazing locales that have been show and the way they have been captured on camera is truly commendable.

The movie is slow moving and has its drags here and there. Overall, it is an average movie, but for sure can be seen once to understand the sad plight of farmers and to know the kind of life they lead.

Can be watched once!
