KATTAPPAVA KANOM MOVIE REVIEW

To many young writers/directors Soodhu Kavvum would easily rank as a cult film worth emulating and there have been many attempts at that. “KK” too forms its basis loosely on “SK”. Kattappava Kanom is by Mani Seiyon and surprisingly this film that was earlier titled “Thanni Raja” underwent a title change after Baahubali immortalized the character “Kattappa”, the character played by Sibiraj’s father Satyaraj. The director too who went by the name Manikandan is now Mani Seiyon.

Honestly KK begins at a very lethargic pace with the narration jumping around with no focus. It is only mid way that sense prevails and its quirkiness brings about a smile on the face of the viewer. The way the plot unfolds is quite interesting with “adult comedy” (only the lines) peppered generously, can have the audience in splits. At the same time with a very quirky plot and an interesting script the writing is not great and that sticks out sore.

Sibiraj tries to fit the bill though not handsomely, he deserves praise for playing a loser unmindful of his image and sticking to the needs of the script. Aishwarya Rajesh is OK, but again does not shine in a decent role. It is the support cast who carry the movie entirely on their shoulders. Yogi babu, Kaali Venkat and Jayakumar spice up the narration with their “mature innuendos” .

The men behind the scenes do a decent job. Cinematography by Anand Jeeva is decent while music by Santhosh Dayanidhi is apt. The lack of full blown songs works to the viewer’s advantage. Editing could have been better while the writer/director deserves credit for taking comedy “Full-on” without reservations. At the same time the screenplay could have been tighter without dull moments.

KK is a new and bold attempt and deserves a visit to the theatres. But you might not like to watch it in the company of kids or elders.
