Gran Turismo is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film directed by Neill Blomkamp from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin.
Produced by Columbia Pictures, PlayStation Productions, and 2.0 Entertainment, it is based on the racing simulation video game series of the same name developed by Polyphony Digital. It tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player who was able to become a professional race car driver.
At the outset it is a very old age formulaic sports films that hits all the right buttons that are cliché and yet engaging. The against the odds stories are always inspiring and GT makes the right noises as it progresses effortlessly with the subtle family melodrama overshadowed by the cranking of the engines, the power bursts and the screeching screenplay. The fact that this was inspired by a true story helps the narrative. There are issues with the script as well. Everything and everyone look clean and gleaned. The transformation from the computer to the racing track looks easily engineered like a game. But then at a little over two hours it is supposed to be entertaining and exciting, forget the line on the track as the lead character says. GT almost gets it right.
Performance wise the actors do not exceed expectations. David Harbour is good. Archie Madekwe is decent. Orlando Bloom and the rest are OK.
Cinematography by Jacques Joufferet is impressive. Musical score by Lorne Balfe and Andrew Kawcczynski is entertaining. Dialogues are OK. Editing by Colby Parker and Austyn Daines is crisp. Direction is standard.
GRAN TURISMO is a fun watch !! grunt
