Nitya Mehra is the director of “Baar Baar Dekho” which marks her debut in Bollywood. After working with renowned directors like Mira Nair, Ang Lee and Farhan Akhtar, she brings in a lot of experience on the table for her initial offering.
The story of BBD is akin to the many Hollywood rom-drama that we are used to for quite a long time. It has also been inspired by a couple of movies, but the difference is the quirkiness in the screenplay that keeps the interest going. But after a while its repetitiveness can also test the patience of the viewer. The time travel idea in a romantic drama is quite engaging, but the script lacks the soul that is essential in such dramas. The characters are half baked with no sound reasoning. It is also amusing why these characters behave in a certain way without any provocation. The idea to not go melodramatic is understood yet the story worked around a plot like this lacks reasoning and the screenplay is like the weather in England.
Siddharth Malhotra does his best, this could be his best, but in a movie as this, even his best is just not enough. His one expression in all versions is plain boring. Katrina Kaif tries best as well, the characterization suits her profile but she comes out less credible in performance especially during the latter half. Sarika after a long time looks jaded on screen and the others just make up the numbers without any strong roles.
Technically the movie is good, the cinematography scores well while the other technical aspects in this time travel romantic drama has no serious shortcomings. The back ground score deserves special mention and thankfully breathes some life into the insipid scenes. A couple of songs too stand out. Dialogues are very standard, while the direction for a first timer is quite decent.
Nitya Mehra brings in her varied experience to deliver an OK movie that could have been told in much more telling way with a stronger script and better performances.
