Andavan Kattalai Movie Review

andavan kattalaiAndavan Kattalai is National award winner Manikandan’s third outing after the amazingly successful “Kakka Muttai” and the average “Kuttrame Thandanai”.

Andavan Kattalai has no great story per se, but compensates with a wonderful screenplay that has very few dull moments. The script laced with intelligent humour and rib tickling comedies loyal to the script ensures an entertaining ride for the viewers. The script takes on a lot of contemporary issues dealing them with fine wit and at the same time conveying messages delicately. The romance track between the lead pair oscillates from being ordinary to interesting. The “Elam” card that does not seem relevant to the nucleus of the plot could have been avoided as it looked injected for a certain appeal.

Credit is due to Vijay Sethupathi for playing a role as simple as this despite being very popular for mass roles. Vijay Sethupathi eases into this character effortlessly. Ritika Singh as the female lead is the perfect foil and is the major reason why the romantic track looks convincing. Her emotions and reactions are delightful. Nazar is dignified in his role and so are the others including Yogi Babu who performs at ease. Another character that deserves special mention is Vinothini Vaithyanathan.

The cinematography works hand in glove with the script without being reckless. The background score stays simple while the songs fit the mood of the movie. The dialogues are amusing and the editing mostly error free. With three men working on the script and the screenplay, AK touches the right chord with the viewers. Manikandan, the director yet again proves his mastery over his craft.

Andavan Kattalai is a thoroughly enjoyable family entertainer supported by some very good performances from the cast and crew.
