YWCA 125th Year Celebration ” SPECTRUM 2017”

Marking the 125th year of glorious service by the YWCA of Madras, a three day celebration from the 8th of March to the 10th of March concluded with felicitation program called Spectrum 2017 held at Kamarajar Arangam, Chennai.  

The event was graced by distinguished chief guests, Mrs. Valsa Benjamin Cherian the Convenor of SPECTRUM 2017 (YWCA), Mrs. Cheruba Santosham  the  Co- convenor of  SPECTRUM 2017 (YWCA), Mrs. SaikalaJaikar  the President (YWCA), Actress Gautami Tadimalla and other awardees along with the main sponsor AVT Gold Cup.

Spectrum 2017 is a fund raising event for constructing 125th anniversary block which will be the extension of community college, the colourful evening was filled with dance, music and comedy. Actress Andrea Jeremiah attracted the audience with her voice and more performances by celebrity dance guru, John Britto Dance Company, Juggling act by Thrill Veera, Mimicry by Jaichandran, George and Kurunji. Also Sangita Santosham a versatile and multilingual vocalist performed western classical music to contemporary jazz along with Hannah Elliot &Sharanya Gopinath.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Valsa Benjamin Cherian the Convenor of SPECTRUM 2017 (YWCA) said, “Even though the women literacy growth is moving in a positive direction, large amount of women are not trained and given skilled education. To provide more skilled women force to this community we are extending our community college by constructing a new block inside the campus with all facilities by raising the fund through this cultural fest SPECTRUM 2017. Also I thank Princess Francoise Sturdza, from Heart for India Foundation for their wonderful support.”

During the event Actress Ms.Gautami Tadimalla was awarded for her accomplishment as an actor and her outstanding contribution to society, Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse S.J., awarded for his support and guidance in setting up the Community College and Princess Francoise Sturdza, from Heart for India Foundation whose financial support helps to fund the courses offered at the college free of cost to the students.

The Young Women’s Christian Association of Madras (YWCA OF Madras) was founded in 1892.   The YWCA is a non-Governmental Organization (NGO) committed to serving women and girls irrespective of their caste or religious affiliations.

The YWCA is engaged in many projects for the Empowerment of women and children. One such project is the Community College, started in 2002 to empower girl children through vocational training in life coping skills and work skills. The college also offers Diploma Courses affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Open University.
